No iridophores were observed in pnp4a−/− mutants at 4 and 10 dpf. A large number of iridophores were observed on the iris but not on the body surface of wild-type fish (A, B), while no iridophores were observed on the iris and body surface of the pnp4a−/− mutants (C, D) at 4 dpf. Many iridophores were observed on the iris, operculum, peritoneum and swim bladder of wild-type fish (E-G), while no iridophores were observed on the iris, yolk sac and body surface of pnp4a−/− mutants (H-J) at 10 dpf. Compared with the wild type fish, pnp4a−/− mutants displayed black iris (color of RPE) due to the loss of visible iridophores. Blue arrowheads indicate iridophores. Scale bar in A-J, 1 mm. |
