The gene name was updated on May 20, 2013 to reflect the evolutionary relationship of this gene with the mammalian POU domain, class 5 genes. The data suggests that there is not a true ortholog in human and mouse for this zebrafish gene. The synteny, amino acid alignment and phylogenetic trees suggest that a duplication event occurred in the last common ancestor of extant cartilaginous fishes and bony fishes resulting in 2 POU5 genes. Subsequently, the bony fishes, marsupials and birds maintained pou5f3, but lost pou5f1 which was maintained in eutherians and marsupials. This gene is an apparent ortholog (AA, CL) with the opposum, xenopus and chicken Pou5f3 genes.
