Bmp signalling is active during craniofacial dermal bone development. Cryosection immunostaining of the zebrafish embryo at 5dpf revealed the presence of phospho-Smad1/5/9 in putative osteoblasts and surrounding cells of dermal bones, including the opercle (A-A′), parasphenoid (B-B′), and cleithrum (C-C′, dotted line). For anatomical reference of the location of osteoblasts in the opercle and parasphenoid, please see (Eames et al., 2013), which contains confocal stacks similar to these section planes. n = 3. Scale bars: A-C = 50 μm. Abbreviations: cl = cleithrum; et = ethmoid trabecula; hs = hyosymplectic; op = opercle; pf = pectoral fin; ps = parasphenoid; pSmad1/5/9 = phospho-Smad1/5/9. |
