Only epidermis is competent to respond to Eda signaling. Scale forming cells labeled with sp7:EGFP (yellow). (A) Superficially located epidermal clones that misexpress Eda (magenta) were associated with ectopic scales (n = 10). (B) Deeper clones of Eda-misexpressing cells were associated with myotomes, co-expressed sp7:EGFP, or both, and were likely dermal. Such clones also triggered ectopic scale formation (n = 7). (C) Superficially located epidermal clones that expressed Edar (magenta) were associated with ectopic scale formation (n = 20). (D) Deeper, myotome-associated Edar-misexpressing clones did not trigger scale formation (n = 8). Scale bar, 100 µm. |
