I am interested in gaining a greater understanding of how molecular
dialogues between cells within a vertebrate organism are initiated, and
in particular, how they control early developmental processes. My
research is therefore focussed on the interactions made by proteins
located at the cell surface - the site at which cells often receive
signals from their immediate environment. The laboratory has developed
high throughput techniques and resources to discover novel extracellular
receptor:ligand pairs with the ultimate aim of making a major
contribution to a genome-wide view of these signal-initiating events. To
understand the functional consequences of identified extracellular
interactions during early development, we use the popular model
vertebrate, the zebrafish.
