STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTERESTS
The main interest of the laboratory is the discovery of novel
extracellular receptor:ligand interactions that initiate communication
between the cells and tissues within vertebrate organisms. Genes
encoding proteins that are secreted or tethered to the cell surface are
estimated to account for approximately a fifth of all vertebrate genes
and yet they remain largely understudied, primarily due to their complex
biochemical nature.

We have developed a research programme to allow a large-scale approach
to studying these proteins and particularly their extracellular
interactions. We have chosen to use the zebrafish as our model organism
so that the functional consequences of any interactions can be more
readily determined.
