Silent heart embryos do not exhibit hypoxia. The hypoxic response was monitored in transgenic embryos containing a hypoxia reporter Tg(phd3::GFP). Embryos deficient in von Hippel-­‐Lindau (vhl) tumour suppressor gene expression were used as a positive control. Vhl­-/- embryos exhibit a systemic hypoxic response, reflected by upregulation of GFP expression. No upregulation of GFP expression was observed in sih embryos lacking blood flow compared to controls. White arrowheads indicate mild GFP fluorescence in the brain region.
