Tertiary but not primary isonitriles remove tetrazylmethyl (TzMe) groups from tertiary amines and pyridines. (a) Synthesis of the N,N-dimethylaminobenzyl (DMBA) group with TzMe-substituent by reacting the amine with 3-bromomethyl-6-tert-butyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. (b) Synthesis of pyridine with TzMe-substituent by reacting pyridine with 3-bromomethyl-6-tert-butyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine. (c) Reaction of (trimethylsilyl)methyl isonitrile (TMS-MeNC) with TzMe-DMBA does not release tertiary amines. (d) Reaction of TMS-MeNC with TzMe-Py does not release pyridine. (e) Exploration of a series of isonitriles and trans-cyclooctene (TCO) revealed near-quantitative pyridine release from TzMe-Py upon reaction with tertiary isonitriles. |
