Abstract
Mauthner (M-) cells were frequently missing in zebra fishes γ-irradiated with 1000 rad during gastrula stages until about 12 hr after fertilization. The cells were resistant after this time. The S phase of the final cell cycle of M-cell precursors ends between 9 and 12 hr. This indicates that the M-cell precursors are sensitive to irradiation before the end of their final cell division. The M-cell deletions appear to be at random and require killing of only one or a small number of cells.
