Abstract
The highly-soluble nitrogen-doped carbon dots were prepared with a high yield of 78%. The formation mechanism indicated that the limited polymerization was responsible for their high yield. The low toxicity and suitability of the carbon dots for imaging application were validated using zebrafish as a model.
