For several years, we have been interested in how epithelial cell sheets are restructured to form branched tubular networks. As a model system, we have used the developing tracheal system in the embryo of Drosophila melanogaster. Recently, a number of similarities have shown up between tracheal development in the fly and the formation of blood vessels in the fish. Based on these observation, we intend to study blood vessel development in zebrafish, using genetic and molecular approaches combined with avant-garde live imaging.
