Description: Sections through the ear at different stages of development, taken at the level of the anterior otolith in each case. As the neural tube enlarges and the head connective tissues develop, the ear becomes displaced ventrally and the statoacoustic ganglion, originating from the ventral wall of the vesicle, becomes shifted medially to a position between the ventromedial wall of the otocyst and the hindbrain. The ear epithelium rapidly differentiates, creating thickened maculae within which hair cells lie apically and supporting cells have their nuclei located basally. hb, hindbrain; aol, anterior otolith; am, anterior macula; pm, posterior macula; g, statoacoustic ganglion; sch, hub of semicircular canal; hc, hair cells; sc, supporting cells. Scale bar, 50 µm. Reprinted by permission from the Journal of Comparative Neurology.
