Zebrafish slc1a3/eaat1 and slc1a2/eaat2 paralogs show subfunctionalized expression. The expression patterns of slc1a3/eaat1 and slc1a2/eaat2 was assessed using whole-mount in situ hybridization on larval (3dpf) zebrafish. While slc1a3a/eaat1a shows expression in glia cells of the brain (A and B), slc1a3b/eaat1b is expressed in neuromasts of the lateral line organ (C and D). Expression of the slc1a2 paralogs overlap in the brain (E-H), however, they differ in the retina. slc1a2a/eaat2a is expressed in the inner retina (E and F, arrow), whereas slc1a2b/eaat2b is expressed in the outer retina (G and H, arrow).
