Name: | posterior lateral line |
---|---|
Synonyms: | midbody lateral line, midtrunk line, pll |
Definition: | One of eight distinct lateral lines in the 4-day larva. The posterior lateral line runs along the horizontal myoseptum from the otic vessicle to the caudal fin. Lateral lines form a sensory system on the surface of the fish, consisting of small sensory patches (neuromasts) distributed in discrete lines over the body surface. The lateral line system is stimulated by local water displacements and vibrations, and detects propulsion of the fish through the water, as well as facilitating shoaling, prey capture, and predator and obstacle avoidance. (See Anatomical Atlas entry for lateral line by T. Whitfield.) |

Name: | myelin sheath |
---|---|
Synonyms: | astrocyte sheath, oligodendrocyte myelin sheath, Schwann cell myelin sheath |
Definition: | An electrically insulating fatty layer that surrounds the axons of many neurons. It is an outgrowth of glial cells: Schwann cells supply the myelin for peripheral neurons while oligodendrocytes supply it to those of the central nervous system. |
Ontology: | GO: Cellular Component [GO:0043209] QuickGO AmiGO |
Name: | deformed |

Synonyms: | disfigured, distorted |
Definition: | A morphological quality inhering in a bearer by virtue of the bearer's being distorted in form. |
