During the sex determination period, germ cells develop following the trajectory from germline stem cell (GSC), GSC to progenitor (G–P) transition, early progenitor (Prog-E), committed progenitor (Prog-C), late progenitor (Prog-L) to the female meiotic stage. Foxl2l is essential for the maturation of Prog-C and the ensuing Prog-L development. In foxl2l mutant, germ cells are arrested at Prog-C. Some mutant Prog-C cells (mProg-C) express nanos2.
