Red hexagons mark the position of conserved non-coding element (CNE) (jaw joint regulatory sequence 1, JRS1) downstream of Nkx3.2, where filled hexagons mark CNEs selected for in vivo functional characterization in this study. The corresponding chromosome/contig number of each locus is indicated below the gene order schematic of each species. Daggers indicate extinct species.
