Description
Predicted to have DNA binding activity and DNA-binding transcription factor activity. Involved in several processes, including ameboidal-type cell migration; cardiac muscle progenitor cell migration to the midline involved in heart field formation; and posterior lateral line neuromast primordium migration. Predicted to localize to nucleus. Is expressed in several structures, including ectoderm; heart; mesoderm; neural crest; and trunk. Orthologous to human SNAI1 (snail family transcriptional repressor 1).

Note
This gene was originally named snail2 (Thisse et al. 1993). In 2004 Manzanares et al. demonstrated that this gene arose from a duplication event in the teleost lineage that resulted in snail1a and snail1b resulting in a gene name change.
