Statement of Research Interest
The Nath lab works at the interface of genetics, environmental exposures, and chemical biology. We map connections between genes and the human biology they regulate by integrating multi-omics human datasets. The overarching goals of these analyses are to uncover the functions of understudied disease-associated genes and thereby identify potential drug targets. We then “retro-translate” these human findings into causal and mechanistic studies using zebrafish models of human disease uniquely developed in our lab, with an eye towards the influence of environmental factors. Finally, we execute in vivo chemical screens to discover therapeutic lead compounds. Our long-term goal is to develop small molecules that modulate the activity of pathogenic targets implicated in metabolic diseases and neurodegenerative disorders.
