Name: scale primordium
Synonyms: scale placode, scale primordia
Definition: A portion of tissue that gives rise to the scale. At the initial stages the primordium is composed of an accumulation of fibroblast below the basil epidermis. As the primordium develops the epidermis over the fibroblast alters: the basal epidermal cells become cuboidal and narrow, the collagen matrix remodels and the hemidesmosomes disappear.
Ontology: Anatomy Ontology [ZFA:0001704]
Name: epidermis morphogenesis
Synonyms: hypodermis morphogenesis
Definition: The process in which the anatomical structures of the epidermis are generated and organized. The epidermis is the outer epithelial layer of an animal, it may be a single layer that produces an extracellular material (e.g. the cuticle of arthropods) or a complex stratified squamous epithelium, as in the case of many vertebrate species.
