Name: lens epithelium
Synonyms:
Definition: Epithelium which borders the anterior and equitorial region of the lens. Lens growth in zebrafish occurs via the differentiation of additional fibre cells from lens epithelial cells.
Ontology: Anatomy Ontology [ZFA:0001326]
Name: lens epithelial cell proliferation
Synonyms:
Definition: The multiplication or reproduction of lens epithelial cells, resulting in the expansion of a cell population. Lens epithelial cells make up the lens epithelium, which is located in the anterior portion of the lens between the lens capsule and the lens fibers and is a simple cuboidal epithelium. The epithelial cells of the lens regulate most of the homeostatic functions of the lens such as osmolarity and liquid volume. The lens epithelial cells also serve as the progenitors for new lens fibers. The lens epithelium constantly lays down fibers in the embryo, fetus, infant, and adult, and continues to lay down fibers for lifelong growth.
