Abstract
Probiotics have attracted considerable attention in recent years since their ability to modulate immunity but, at present, their possible effects on reproduction and on mechanisms controlling oogenesis are still unexplored. In the present study, the effects of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus, as a feed additive, on zebrafish (Danio rerio) oocyte maturation were analysed. At this regard, molecules involved in maturation process were evaluated on class IIIA, IIIB and IV oocytes. The molecular changes induced by probiotic, were correlated with water uptake occurring during last phase of oocyte maturation determined by FT-IR Microspectroscopy analysis. Finally, in vitro oocyte maturation was performed to test a direct role of probiotic on gametes maturation.
