BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH INTERESTS
I completed by Bachelor of Science in 1991 at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. In 1992 I gained an Honours Degree in Biochemistry at the same university by undertaking a short project analysing the expression of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene in mouse development. This project was carried out in Prof. Brandon Wainwright’s laboratory at the Centre for Molecular and Cellular Biology (CMCB). I then joined Prof. Peter Koopman’s laboratory at the CMCB and focussed on the cloning of mouse Sox transcription factor genes and characterisation of their expression during organogenesis. I was awarded my PhD in 1999. Because of the expression of many Sox genes in the central nervous system (CNS), I became interested in the molecular genetics of CNS development and took up a post-Doctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. Toshiya Yamada at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), University of Queensland. We were investigating the patterning and differentiation of embryonic CNS neurons in mouse and chicken embryos by examining the expression of subclass-specific transcription factors and through manipulation hedgehog signalling. In 2001, Dr Yamada died and I continued in his laboratory as acting principal investigator. In 2003, I joined Prof. Philip Ingham’s as a Post-Doc and I’m currently working on muscle patterning and differentiation and the hedgehog signalling pathway in zebrafish.
