Fig. 14 Inhibition of early steroidogenesis by triploidy and EE2 administration. steroidogenic pathway in zebrafish gonads under the influence of ploidy and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) treatment. The diagram shows cholesterol conversion into major sex steroids and corticosteroids, highlighting enzymes disrupted by triploidy and EE2. Most disruptions occurred in the early steps of steroidogenesis, including cholesterol transport into mitochondria and conversion to pregnenolone. The blue area marks the androgen/11-ketotestosterone branch and the pink area the estrogen branch. Upward and downward triangles denote significantly upregulated or downregulated genes in the indicated comparisons: blue (diploid control vs. triploid control, 2n vs. 3n), red (diploid control vs. EE2-treated diploid, 2n vs. 2n + EE2), green (triploid control vs. EE2-treated triploid, 3n vs. 3n + EE2), and magenta (diploid control vs. EE2-treated triploid, 2n vs. 3n + EE2). Bold labels mark the reference groups used for transcriptomic comparisons. Gene abbreviations: acute regulatory protein (star), cytochrome P450 family 11 subfamily A member 1 (cyp11a1), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (hsd3b1), cytochrome P450 family 17 subfamily A member 1 (cyp17a1), 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3 (hsd17b3), cytochrome P450 family 21 subfamily A member 1 (cyp21a1), cytochrome P450 family 11 subfamily C member 1 (cyp11c1), cytochrome P450 family 11 subfamily B member (cyp11b), 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (hsd11b2), 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (hsd17b1).
