This region targets proteins to the membrane. CAAX is the prenylation site recognized by farnesyltransferase and geranylgeranyltransferase. The CAAX box is located at the C-terminus of the protein. The identity of X determines which enzyme recognizes the site. The prenyl group is covalently bound to the cysteine. Proteins with an attached prenyl moity are membrane associated.
