Chimeric constructs comprising the binding moiety of nanobodies fused to fluorescent proteins (referred to as chromobodies) have been successfully employed to visualize endogenous intracellular antigens in mammalian cells (Rothbaueretal., 2006;Kaiseret al.,2014). Nanobodies are single-domain IgG fragments derived from heavy-chain antibodies (Hamers-Castermanet al., 1993) and are the smallest antigen-recognizing protein elements known to date.
