heparin proteoglycan metabolic process

Term ID
GO:0030202
Synonyms
  • heparan sulfate metabolic process
  • heparin metabolism
Definition
The chemical reactions and pathways involving heparin proteoglycans, which have glycosaminoglycan repeats consisting predominantly of alternating alpha-(1->4)-linked D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine-6-sulfate residues. Heparin is similar to heparan sulfates but is of somewhat higher average Mr (6000-20000) and contains fewer N-acetyl groups and more N-sulfate and O-sulfate groups. They found mainly as an intracellular component of mast cells. 0198506732
