Expression of Cdh2 in the inner ear of developing zebrafish. Panels (A) and (B) are lateral views of the otic vesicle (Ov) of 24 hpf and 48 hpf whole-mount embryos, respectively, labeled by in situ hybridization with cadherin-2 cRNA (cdh2). Dorsal is up and anterior is to the left. Panels (C–F) are cross sections of the inner ear stained with Cadherin-2 antibody (Cdh2). The arrow in panel (A) points to a sensory patch in the anterioventral portion of the otic vesicle. The arrow in panel (B) indicates a cdh2-positive neuromast in the epidermis above the inner ear. Panel (F) is a surface view of the anterior macula (Am). Other abbreviations: H, hindbrain; Hc, hair cells; Pm, posteriomedial macula; Op, otic placode; SAg, statoacoustic ganglion; Sc, supporting cells. Scale bar: 50 μm.

Expression of cadherin-4 message (cdh4) (A–C), and Cadherin-4 immunoreactivity (Cdh4) (D–F) in the inner ear of developing zebrafish. Panels (A) and (B) are lateral views of the otic vesicle of whole-mount embryos. Dorsal is up and anterior is to the left. Panels (C–F) are cross sections of the otic vesicle. The intense labeling of the epidermal tissue in panel (E) (arrow) has been shown to be non-specific, by preabsorption studies (Liu et al., 2001b). Panel (F) is from a section adjacent to panel (F) in Fig. 1. Ol, otolith; other abbreviations are the same as in Fig. 1. Scale bar: 50 μm.

Expression of cdh11 message (cdh11) in the inner ear of embryonic zebrafish. All pictures on the left panel show lateral views of the inner ear of whole-mount embryos. Dorsal is up and anterior is to the left. Pictures on the right panel are cross sections at the level of the inner ear of zebrafish embryos. The arrow in (H) points to cdh11-positive hair cells. Abbreviations are the same as in Fig. 1. Scale bar: 50 μm.
