Definition: The locus coeruleus is a widely projecting isthmal noradrenergic nucleus. It consists of between three and ten neurons, most of which have multiple, bilaterally projecting axons.

Definition: A cell capable of producting norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is a catecholamine with multiple roles including as a hormone and a neurotransmitter. In addition, epinephrine is synthesized from norepinephrine by the actions of the phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase enzyme.
