Term: lateral crista ciliary base
Note: This page represents a term created by the combination ("post-composition") of two ontology terms. For more information on the individual terms, click the hyperlinked name.
Name: lateral crista
Synonyms: lateral crista ampullaris, lateral cristae, lateral semicircular canal sensory patch, lateral semicircular canal sensory patches, lc, medial crista
Definition: Patches of thickened, pseudostratified epithelium of the inner ear, consisting of regular arrays of sensory hair cells interspersed with supporting cells. Each patch has its own characteristic shape and polarity pattern. (See Anatomical Atlas entry for sensory patches of the ear by T. Whitfield.)
Ontology: Anatomy Ontology [ZFA:0000166]
Name: ciliary base
Synonyms: cilial base, cilium base, flagellar base, flagellum base
Definition: Area of the cilium (also called flagellum) where the basal body and the axoneme are anchored to the plasma membrane. The ciliary base encompasses the distal part of the basal body, transition fibers and transition zone and is structurally and functionally very distinct from the rest of the cilium. In this area proteins are sorted and filtered before entering the cilium, and many ciliary proteins localize specifically to this area.
