Research Interest "Electrical synapses in the vertebrate nervous system"

Electrical synapses in the vertebrate nervous system are formed by two gene families termed connexins and pannexins. They represent a second major communication pathway between neurons aside from chemical synapses. We focus on the identity and function of these gene families using the zebrafish and mouse retina as experimental model. Ongoing research adresses the potential role of this synapse type in vision as well as plasticity phenomenons found throughout the nervous system.
